Natural Language Processing

Published on Sep 12, 2018

The Promise of Natural Language Processing (NLP) is growing in prevalence, sophistication, and ubiquity. Clients are far more curious of what it can do. As designers, developers and engineers we are continuing to refine our understanding of NLP and the integration of it into unrealised areas.

The question is what can NPL do?

The rising popularity of Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Microsoft Cortana have nurtured people’s expectations that they can speak to their software and it will understand what to do.

For example, by stating a command, “Alexa, play ‘Back to Black’, the Amy Winehouse hit plays where you are while you continue to play chess and without getting up or loosing focus.

This same concept is also being applied to applications and data, making it easier for everyone to ask questions, complete processes and analyze the data they have at hand, and do it from where they are.

At TonkaBI our clients are asking about insurance and voice. They are getting ready for the day when items are added to policies as they are purchased simply by a voice command OR a claim is notified and processed all through voice, video and photos from the scene of the accident or the house.

Today it is possible, tomrrow it will be easier to impliment. Tools and skills to deliver these new procceses are here.

Gartner predicts by 2020 that 50 percent of analytical queries will be generated via search, NLP or voice for example.

What does this mean to your business? It means that sooner than you think it will be much easier for the Executive on the go to quickly ask his mobile device to tell him: “Total sales by sale manager who closed a deal in New York,” then filter to “orders in the last 30 days,” and then group by “product".

Or, at your child’s school, the principal could ask: “What was the average score of students this year,” then filter to “students in 6th grade,” and group by “teacher’s subject.”

Or, a local farmer buy some cattle and livestock at an auction and as they are loaded on to the truck add them to the policy through voice, reading the inventory into the system, the mid-term adjustment instantly recognised and the policy adjusted.

NLP will empower people to ask more nuanced questions through devices and be less tied to desktops and laptops. NLP will easily send and receive relevant answers that lead to better everyday processes, interactions, insights and decisions.
