staying fit at home

Being someone who has always found it difficult to maintain consistency when it comes to working out or following a healthy diet, the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown came as a doorway to so many more unhealthy eating habits and constant lack of any will to get off my chair; and I am sure I am not alone in this struggle. Six months into staying indoors, I finally realised how it was high time for me to get fit again and started attempting to do home workouts. But it is not that easy to stay motivated unless you have a proper plan when you start building any new habit from scratch. Taking inspiration from this book called “Atomic Habits” by James Clear and adopting correct use of technology to help stay fit, I have been quite successful in achieving consistency with my home workouts.

Here are some ways you can use technology to keep yourself motivated to stay fit from home:

1. Start small and stick to the plan - Customized online fitness plans

If you have not been working out for a while then you will need to design a plan that suits your current fitness levels. Take into consideration the fatigue from pandemic related stress and your energy levels while deciding your fitness plan and set reasonable goals for yourself to start with. Not everyone has the same fitness goals and hence it is important to customize your exercise plan accordingly. This is where online trainers and nutritionists come into the picture who would be able to help you with tailor made fitness plans and diets based on your goals.

2. Keep specific goals and track your progress - Wearable Tech

It is very important to be specific about what you want to achieve when you set your goals. Setting an ambiguous goal like “getting into better shape” will make you feel confused as to where you are headed and you may not even realise whether you have achieved it or not. This can be done by tracking your progress on a regular basis using fitness devices or smartphone apps. This will keep you accountable, give you a sense of accomplishment and encourage you to keep going.

3. Accountability partner

The whole idea of an accountability partner is knowing that someone else is watching you and you are answerable to them and vise versa. There are online platforms that help you find virtual accountability partners who share the same fitness goals as you. You need to make sure you find someone who you can trust to show up and will give you just the right combination of support/encouragement and tough love. You don’t want to be too demanding on each other but at the same time want to make sure that you’re helping to drive each other forward.

4. Keep it interesting by trying out new stuff - Online fitness channels

It might be beneficial to make sure to keep the work out interesting by adding a mindfulness element while you are working-out by engaging in a parallel activity like listening to a podcast or music. This can help your conscious mind to take a break from your worries and boost creativity. While you want to stick to your original plan, always make room for incorporating new stuff because doing the same routine can become boring over time. Follow fitness channels online which come up with new content on a regular basis and keep changing your routine to keep it interesting.

5. Stay hydrated - Smart water bottles

Staying hydrated is undoubtedly one of the core pieces of staying fit but many people struggle with drinking 8 glasses of water as recommended by most nutritionists. Now there are smart water bottles that will track how much water you have consumed, suggests how much water you should be drinking based on your physique and even connects to your smart devices such as Fitbit and your phone.

6. Reward yourself

It always helps to give yourself an extra treat as a reward for sticking with your fitness plan. Choose the reward that is meaningful to you and integrate it into every workout which will fuel you with the internal motivation that you need to keep going. So don't shy away from indulging in something sweet or taking a nap or taking a day off at work or buying some new workout gear for yourself or do absolutely nothing at all!

It is high time we accept the fact that we may have to live with the pandemic and we certainly must get moving, but do it right with all the technological resources that are available to make staying fit easier for us.
